Watch Who You Make Political Friends With...It Might Destroy Your Message

To the bishops, and lay Catholic activist that are protesting the Arizona law, and joining in boycotts beware who your associating with. Watch who your making friends with, and who is marching side-by-side with you trumpeting your message before the nation.

The Catholic church may find it's message diluted by the godless voices, that are just using the scriptures and the power of the church for political gain of progressive policies.

"With his mouth the godless man destroyeth his neighbor; But through knowledge shall the righteous be delivered." Proverbs 11:9 American Standard Version (ASV)

Perfect example for why we as Catholics should take caution, and watch who we are associated with in political alliance is Speaker Pelosi. She is pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, and wants to turn the U.S. into a massive welfare state.

Pelosi loves to twist Catholic teachings and attempts to use the church as a pawn in her political game of chess. The problem is our church leaders are running to her for help, while she is using them for endorsement of her policies.

Does The Catholic Church Encourage A "Welfare State"?

With the debate about national health care and the growing power of the federal government, citizens are fearful of high taxes and a loss of liberty. We have also heard the voice of Catholic social service agencies cryout for government intervention. However, is government the solution to all our social problems? What does the Catholic church teach about the welfare state, or social assistance state?

Here are three quotes from a Vatican Encyclical that talks about this subject and gives a clear opinion from the church:

"In recent years the range of such intervention has vastly expanded, to the point of creating a new type of State, the so-called "Welfare State". This has happened in some countries in order to respond better to many needs and demands, by remedying forms of poverty and deprivation unworthy of the human person. However, excesses and abuses, especially in recent years, have provoked very harsh criticisms of the Welfare State, dubbed the "Social Assistance State". Malfunctions and defects in the Social Assistance State are the result of an inadequate understanding of the tasks proper to the State" (1)

"By intervening directly and depriving society of its responsibility, the Social Assistance State leads to a loss of human energies and an inordinate increase of public agencies, which are dominated more by bureaucratic ways of thinking than by concern for serving their clients, and which are accompanied by an enormous increase in spending." (2)

Some have mis-quoted church teaching by stating that if business or the private sector is not able to handle health care than its the obligation of the state to take over. However, this is what the true teaching is:

"The State can also exercise a substitute function, when social sectors or business systems are too weak or are just getting under way, and are not equal to the task at hand. Such supplementary interventions, which are justified by urgent reasons touching the common good, must be as brief as possible, so as to avoid removing permanently from society and business systems the functions which are properly theirs, and so as to avoid enlarging excessively the sphere of State intervention to the detriment of both economic and civil freedom." (3)

Government can provide subsitute relief until the business community can gear up to its mission. However, we already have a viable health market, that needs free-market reforms.

Conclusion:

The church teaches us that people , social service groups, non-profits, and even local governments are best at dealing with social issues like health care. We should avoid looking to create a powerful federal agency to run our health system. Lets instead add more free market options to compete with national insurance companies and federal programs.

5. If you break the law you pay the penalty. Justice is blind and no one is above it.

Legitimate public authority has the right and the duty to inflict punishment proportionate to the gravity of the offense. Punishment has the primary aim of redressing the disorder introduced by the offense. When it is willingly accepted by the guilty party, it assumes the value of expiation. Punishment then, in addition to defending public order and protecting people's safety, has a medicinal purpose: as far as possible, it must contribute to the correction of the guilty party."

6. I have a right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, but there is no guarantee of equal results.

The framers of this nation's founding documents drew upon this conviction when they proclaimed the "self-evident truth" that all men are created equal and endowed with inalienable rights grounded in the laws of nature and of nature's God." 7. I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable.
